CLOSURE OF BORDERS HIT HARD ON POULTRY FARMERS

Berea, Oct 12 — Khants’ang Mats’ekha Farmers Coop says closure of borders due to the bird flu outbreak in some parts of South Africa has hit them hard as poultry farmers.

This was said by Khants’ang Mats’ekha Farmers Coop Treasurer Mrs. Mathabang Ntsoebea during an interview with LENA on Thursday.

Mrs. Ntsoebea said their livelihoods relies mostly on poultry keeping but the declared outbreak of bird flu which has resulted in closure of borders has impacted them negatively, therefore their farms are empty as they are unable to import chicks.

She pointed out that the bird flu outbreak has emerged at the wrong time when they are supposed to stock more chicks to be consumed as ready chickens at the festive season.
