Maseru, Jan. 29 —- Following an outcry by Roma Electoral Division villagers under the villages of Maphotong, Ha Tsunyane and Ha Mafefooane about recruitment of labourers engaged in unblocking culverts, farrows on the A5 road along the said villages, such work has been halted indefinitely.
Speaking in an interview, Community Councilor Mr. Sipho Ramalitse said the community has complained that people working in the said project are not from the above-mentioned villages yet the work is being carried out within their area.
He said as community leaders they resolved that the work be halted while they find out how the recruitment was done because they were excluded during the process.
He indicated that they have established that the workers who are from Ha Raboletsi and Ha Lebamang were recruited during a public gathering that was held at Ha Raboletsi last week.
On the other hand, Chairperson of Manonyane Community Council Mr. Makhaola Chele said he only learned about the recruitment from a letter that circulated in their whatsapp group that Roads Directorate was going to have public gathering at Ha Raboletsi for recruitment saying they do not even know the criteria that was used on selecting the villages and recruiting the people.
However, efforts to speak to the Roads Directorate were futile as the phone of the Public Relations was not available.
Workers are actively involved in unblocking culverts in Lesotho, particularly through initiatives like the M19 million ‘Operation Kata-Kata’ project managed by the Roads Directorate, unblocking culverts and clearing drains are critical for preventing erosion, managing water-flow during rainy seasons and extending the lifespan of roads..
