MASERU – Cycling is a versatile sporting activity allowing girls passionate about this sporting activity to join, enjoy and stay healthy.
This was said by Federation of Cycling Lesotho Public Relations Officer (PRO), Ms. Liteboho Letlala.
She said this at an event titled ‘Championship Road Criterium’ held in Maseru on Sunday, where cyclists from different clubs are participating to add more points on their growth and destiny as cyclists.
Ms. Letlala said at least 80 cyclists, most of whom are youth and children including girls are taking part, an indication that this sport is indeed flexible, allowing people of different genders to ride on.
She stipulated that although she could not give clear statistics, girls have this year shown more interest than previous years, hence are participating in the under 14 ladies category amongst others.
The PRO appealed to parents and guardians to support girls wishing to join this sport so that it can give them local and international exposure for exploration of different opportunities as well.
She explained that the race starts at Makoanyane Square to State House saying players are operating against 20 minutes given.
She further said this is an annual event whose goal is to instil the love for cycling amongst growing children.
In the same note, Ms. Lebohang Selepe from Roll a Bike Club said she is participating in the under 18 category and alluded that she has since loved this type of sport while she was still attending school at Leqele high school.
She said even though some view it as a sport for men, she is adamant the sky is the limit and nothing is stopping ladies to join, ride and be happy.
“My intention is to grow more, learn until I receive reward while also empowering other young women to join.” In another story, Thato Tlouoe aged 20 of Lithoteng Cycling Association has called on boys to also consider this type of sport as a means of helping them reduce stress, enduring life challenges and application of strategic thinking to avoid being easily broken, engaging in drugs whenever they meet challenges.
He said when one is a cyclist more focus is required hence less time for confusion.
The Agency has learnt that children and youth from different schools during the winter recession have taken part in the race.
