Maseru, May 06 — The Disaster Management Authority (DMA) has cautioned motorists and the public to remain vigilant as roads in high lying areas including Tlaeng, Lekhalong la Lithunya and Afriski remain dangerously slippery despite ongoing salting operations.
In an interview with LENA, the Assistant Public Relations Officer at DMA Ms. Mahlape Koali said that while efforts to improve road conditions are ongoing, icy surfaces continue to pose a serious risk to road users.
“We are aware that salt has been spread on key routes, however the roads are still very slippery. Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution when travelling through these areas,” she said.
Ms. Koali noted that although snowfall appears to be gradually subsiding, the lingering ice particularly in mountainous regions remains a hazard, especially during early morning and late evening hours when temperatures drop further.
“Disaster prevention and management is everyone’s responsibility. We encourage Basotho to stay informed, avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas and follow guidance from relevant authorities,” Ms. Koali added.
The authority continues to monitor weather conditions and road safety across the country and will provide updates as necessary.
