Maseru, July 28 — The Disaster Management Authority (DMA) has urged Basotho to prepare for heavy snowfall in the highlands and a sharp drop in temperatures over the next three days.
In a weather alert issued today, the DMA said heavy snow is expected in the highlands from Tuesday, July 28 to Wednesday night, July 29. Lowland areas will experience rain and thunderstorms during the same period.
Temperatures are forecast to fall significantly between July 29 and July 30, bringing extreme cold conditions countrywide.
The authority warned the public to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in the early morning and evening hours, saying icy roads could lead to accidents and leave motorists stranded in snow-covered areas.
Farmers have been advised to move livestock from high-altitude cattle posts to lower and safer grazing areas before the weather worsens.
However, the DMA stressed that livestock movements must be coordinated with veterinary inspectors to prevent the spread of Foot and Mouth Disease by avoiding contact between herds.
Households were also cautioned to use heaters, stoves and other heating appliances safely to prevent fire outbreaks, which often increase during extreme cold.
The DMA reminded Basotho that disaster risk reduction is a shared responsibility and urged communities to remain vigilant, monitor official weather updates, and take precautionary measures to protect lives, livestock and property.
