Berea, Jan. 03 — Despite farmers’ effort to heavily invest in crop production, the prevailing drought is threatening agriculture as one of Basotho’s own livelihood sources.
According to one of the Lekokoaneng farmers, Mr. Mojalefa Mokotso they embarked on summer cropping as early as August, but recently they are feeling the heat of extreme drought and their crops are being badly impacted.
Mr. Mokotso said surprisingly they constantly receive some showers of rain, but the scorching heat takes away any available moisture in the soil and thus slows the growth of the crops.
He pointed out that crops like maize and other leave crops are among the worst affected by drought and they are fearful that the country’s food security is likely to be impacted.
