Maseru, Aug. 19—Docket of illegal drugs that involves Member of Parliament (MP) and Basotho National Party (BNP) Machesetsa Mofomobe is kept under high and tight security, says Superintendent (Spt.) Thabo Mohai, Police Public Relations Officer (PRO).
Spt. Mohai was responding to allegations that the docket has disappeared. ‘’That particular docket has been kept under high and tight security due to the sensitivity and importance of its contents, so it is not true that it has disappeared. It is still with us.’’
Mr. Mofomobe is charged alongside three Chinese citizens, Chen Wei, Yang Xiong Kang, Chen Ming Wu and a Mosotho man named Mr. Kemang Masupha.
Mr. Mofomobe was joined later in the case and he appeared on August 13 before court where he was granted a M5000 bail with a surety of M50 000.
He faces charges of illegal drug trafficking and manufacturing linked to an operation in Khubetsoana. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 25.
The five are accused alongside a corporate entity STAN DAR (Pty) Ltd.
Mr. Mofomobe denies the allegations and characterizes the prosecution as political persecution. Co-accused parties have also initiated legal bids to challenge or collapse the charges, citing premature prosecution before investigations were completed.
They are demanding that the prosecution immediately withdraw the case, citing premature prosecution claiming that the police and state prosecution rushed to file charges before conducting a thorough or complete investigation. They further claim that the application highlights that there is currently no criminal docket, no witness statements and no laboratory reports provided to support the state’s massive drug claims.
The four co-accused also argue that it is legally improper to maintain severe criminal charges against them while forcing them to wait for the police to find supporting evidence.
