IEC HOSTS WORKSHOP TO STRENGTHEN CIVIC AND VOTER EDUCATION

Maseru, April 8 — The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has convened a two-day workshop in Maseru aimed at strengthening civic and voter education in Lesotho and promoting inclusive participation in the country’s political system.

Speaking at the event, Programme Manager for Africa and West Asia Regional Programmes, Mrs Manteboheleng Mabetha, said the meeting serves as a roundtable platform to gather views and ideas from key stakeholders on improving civic and voter education in the country.

She explained that the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) is an intergovernmental organisation mandated to advance democracy worldwide.

Mrs Mabetha noted that International IDEA, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is implementing a European Union-funded project aimed at strengthening democratic participation and electoral administration in Lesotho.

She said the project seeks to enhance participation and inclusion within Lesotho’s political system while improving the administration of elections.

“The overall objective is to enhance participation and inclusion in the political system in Lesotho and strengthen the administration of elections,” she said.

Mrs Mabetha added that the initiative focuses on expanding citizen participation, particularly among women, youth, persons with disabilities, LGBTQI+ communities and other vulnerable groups, while also promoting transparency and accountability in politics…
