MASERU — Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO) Secretary-General, Ms Bernadette Lewis, has praised Lesotho for hosting the Commonwealth Digital Roadshow, saying the initiative marks an important milestone in the country’s journey towards digital transformation and inclusive development.
Speaking during the official opening of the event in Maseru, Ms Lewis said the roadshow provides a valuable platform for governments, private sector leaders, innovators and development partners to share ideas on how technology can improve lives and strengthen economies.
She said Commonwealth is committed to helping member states harness the benefits of digitalisation while ensuring that no citizen is left behind.

“The digital future must be inclusive, accessible and beneficial to all our people. This roadshow is an opportunity to shape that future together,” she said.
Ms. Lewis commended Lesotho for demonstrating leadership in embracing innovation and recognising the role of technology in national development.
She noted that investment in digital infrastructure, affordable connectivity and skills development is essential for countries seeking to compete in the modern global economy.
“Technology has the power to transform education, healthcare, agriculture, trade and public services. It is therefore vital that nations invest in systems that empower their citizens,” she said.
The Secretary-General emphasised the need to bridge the digital divide, particularly for rural communities, women and young people who often face barriers to accessing technology.
She said empowering youth through digital skills and entrepreneurship programmes would help unlock Lesotho’s economic potential.
“The young people of Lesotho possess great creativity and talent. With the right opportunities, they can become innovators and job creators who will drive the country forward,” she said.
Ms. Lewis also called for stronger collaboration among governments, businesses and civil society to address challenges such as cybersecurity threats, online misinformation and unequal access to digital tools.

She said the Commonwealth remains ready to provide policy support, technical expertise and partnerships that promote safe, secure and inclusive digital environments.
The Secretary-General further noted that the roadshow forms part of broader efforts to celebrate the Commonwealth’s 120th anniversary, highlighting the organisation’s continued commitment to cooperation, democracy and sustainable development.
