Maseru, April 20 — Community members of Ha Khoete in Thabana-Morena are facing serious travel difficulties after Qhoqhoane Bridge collapsed that has cut off their main route to Mohale’s Hoek and Mafeteng, leaving the community stranded, especially during rainy season.
Speaking during an interview with the Agency, community member Mrs. Masenate Mokoma said the damaged bridge has disrupted their usual travel, forcing them to use longer and more expensive alternative routes.
She explained that residents now have to travel via Mafeteng to Mohale’s Hoek for services such as medical check-up, which has become difficult due to lack of money for transport.
She added that some people often miss their check up which becomes life threatening as they run out of their medication.
Mrs. Mokoma indicated that when the river is not flooded, some people risk crossing it on foot to reach Tsoloane, which is the nearest and cheapest route to Mohale’s Hoek.
However, she noted that this option is not always safe or possible. She stressed that the situation is hard especially for many community members who live below the poverty line and cannot afford the increased transport costs.
She further stated that the community has raised its concerns with their local chief, who has promised to engage nearby councilors to try to find a solution and assist the community.
In a separate interview, Chief Lefu Khoete of Ha Khoete said the recent heavy rains have caused much damage in the area.
He confirmed that, in addition to the collapsed bridge, two houses were also destroyed.
He noted that he has discussed the matter with councilors and neighboring chiefs to seek help and support. He highlighted that affected families are currently staying with relatives while waiting for assistance.
The community continues to seek urgent intervention to rebuild the bridge and ease the burden on residents who rely on the damaged route for essential services.
