Maseru, May 17 — Lack of medication and proper food are some of the security threats that lead to escape of inmates.
This was said by the Officer in Charge of Maseru Central Correctional Institution (MCCI) Assistant Commissioner Tsoto Manaka when testifying before the Commission of Inquiry on the incidents that occurred at MCCI on December 21 and 22, 2023.
Assistant Commissioner Manaka added that shortage of vehicles, which ferry inmates to courts as well as bitterness among correctional officers due to little salaries are also security threats.
He indicated that when he arrived at the institution, inmates were given a quarter loaf with an egg and soft porridge for breakfast but they now eat the latter as well as beans for lunch and dinner.
