LHDA UPDATES COMMUNITY LEADERS ON UPCOMING TUNNEL MAINTENANCE

Botha-Bothe, Aug. 05 — The Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) provided an update to community leaders, village chiefs, and Members of Parliament from the Botha-Bothe district regarding the upcoming planned maintenance of the Phase I Water Transfer and Delivery Tunnels.

Senior Engineer for Maintenance and Operations, Mr. Poloko Sephelane informed the gathering that during inspections conducted between September and November 2019, it was discovered that the paint on all steel-lined sections of the tunnels was deteriorating. If left unaddressed, this could lead to corrosion of the steel lining.

Mr. Sephelane explained that the maintenance work will require a complete station shutdown to drain the tunnels, allowing maintenance teams to enter and perform the necessary repairs. He also mentioned that some machinery at the Ngoajane Electoral Division will be repaired and a construction site will be established at the place.

He emphasized that there will be job opportunities for both skilled and unskilled community members during this period. The Lesotho Highlands Development Authority (LHDA) will collaborate with community leaders to ensure a smooth and transparent hiring process.
