Maseru, Sept. 30 — At 17:00pm Saturday Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) had not officially published results of the 2023 local government elections held countrywide yesterday, Friday.
It was anticipated that the commission would commence publishing the results at 10:00am as according to information received earlier.
Addressing the audience at ‘Manthabiseng Convention Centre on behalf of IEC, Mrs. Lydia Macheli, Civic and Voter Education Manager allayed fears of Basotho saying the commission is still preparing paperwork.
She urged Basotho to be patient saying so far, there is nothing much adding IEC officials are yet to come back to the nation and indicate a way forward.
She reminded the nation that the process of counting, collection and reconciliation including official announcement of the results among others is longer than in the general elections.
“The chain here is from voting centres, to electoral divisions, to the returning officer and to the district, then Convention Centre unlike in general elections where from polling stations, they go to constituencies,” she said.
However, she cautioned Basotho saying IEC is committed to ensuring transparent work in relation to elections, thus will go through the publishing exercise process until completion which they are not sure at this juncture when it will be completed.
IEC reports had shown that in these elections, there are 950 electoral divisions and more than 1000 community councilors would be born out of the local government elections.
