Berea, July 16 — Rehabilitation of the 15.5 kilometre ‘Mamathe to Mahlatsa (B121) road is expected to commence in August, with the project aimed at improving road conditions and enhancing drainage infrastructure to withstand the effects of climate change.
Cooperative Communications Manager at the Roads Directorate Ms. Nozesolo Mpopo, said the rehabilitation would cover the entire stretch of the road and would involve the use of Rapid Response strategies to restore the road to an improved condition.
She said the project would include the reconstruction of drainage structures to strengthen their resilience against harsh weather conditions, adding that the road would be rehabilitated in line with gravel road engineering standards.
Ms. Mpopo noted that the construction work is expected to take eight months and is scheduled for completion in March 2027.
She cautioned motorists that temporary disruptions are anticipated during the construction period and stop-and-go measures will be implemented.
Ms. Mpopo further explained that while the rehabilitation would improve the road’s resilience against weather-related challenges, it would not guarantee complete protection from future damage caused by heavy rains.
She further stated that the Roads Directorate would continue conducting routine maintenance after the completion of the project to prolong the lifespan of the road.
