MAQHAKA RESOURCE CENTRE INTENSIFY TRAININGS ON COMPLEMENTARY FEEDING

Berea, Aug. 18 — In an effort to promote a healthy nation, Maqhaka Resorce Centre will conduct a two days training for two nutrition clubs under Makola Sub-Area on complementary feeding starting Wednesday to Thursday.

The training session is scheduled for Bohlokoa Mots’ene Nutrition Club and Bots’abelo ba Rona Nutrition Club.

According to Maqhaka Resource Centre Area Technical Officer (ATO) Nutrition, Ms. Mahlompho Sheane malnutrition and stunting still remain a crucial challenge faced by the country, therefore the primary purpose of the training is to advocate for the importance of breasting and complementary feeding.

Ms. Sheane added that the training is also intended to capacitate the nutrition clubs with skills on how to ensure a healthy growth and development of children through consumption of nutritious food to supplement breastfeeding.

She stressed that the most important when it comes to complementary feeding, nutrition clubs and nursing mothers have to know when to introduce semi solid or solid foods to babies aged six months to 23.

Ms. Sheane further emphasized the significance of equipping the nutrition clubs with skills on the effective ways of preparing such semi or solid foods without destroying the available nutrients.

She also highlighted that some past years, they used to talk about only three groups of foods, therefore among the issues they are going to discuss includes the 10 groups of food that can be prepared for children.

Additionally, Ms. Sheane said they are going to talk about hygiene, particularly on the surroundings where the children are being raised.

She said the expectation is that after the training, the nutrition clubs will spread such training to nursing mothers who are not part of the nutrition clubs in their respective villages.

Maqhaka Resource Centre is the working hand of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition based at Ha Majara area in Berea.
