MINISTRY AIMS AT INSTALLING MORE CELLPHONE TOWERS

Maseru, Feb. 22 — The Minister of Information, Communication, Science Technology and Innovation is aimed at installing about 21 cellphone towers across the country.

This, Ms. Nthati Moorosi said at the post budget presentation which was hosted by the Revenue Services Lesotho in collaboration with Nedbank Lesotho.

Speaking at this event, Ms. Moorosi indicated that the cellphone towers which are included in the 2024/2025 are an addition to the already existing 28 cellphone tours.

She mentioned that the towers are part of the infrastructure development projects which are spearheaded towards the enabling of development that the country is currently focusing on for the growth of the economy.

Ms. Moorosi further mentioned that with the current situation that the Lesotho National Broadcasting Services (LNBS) is facing of depreciated equipment, the aim is to maintain the equipment for better broadcasting service when the country is preparing to divert into digital television services.

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Vodacom Lesotho Mr. Mohale Ralebitso mentioned that as network operators and service providers, their hope is to have a budget allocated towards infrastructure development of the towers.

He said that the funds which are used towards the maintenance and repairs of the vandalized towers gets wasted as there are repeated jobs done whereas more developments can be done with such funds.

The Ministry of Information, Communication, Science Technology and Innovation is amongst the ministries selected to strengthen scientific and industrial research and enhance technology and used as one of the enablers to accelerate development.

In the 2024/2025 budget allocation, the ministry of Information, Communication, Science Technology and Innovation was allocated over M116 million to expand and manage the ICT sector.
