MOOROSI ADVANCES LESOTHO’S DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURE AND DATA CENTRE AGENDA AT UN MEETING

Maseru, May 07-The Minister of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ms. Nthati Moorosi, held a bilateral meeting with senior officials from the Executive Office of the United Nations Secretary-General (EOSG), including the Director of the Strategic Planning and Monitoring Unit.

The meeting focused on two key areas of engagement which are UN-India South Cooperation and Data Centre Investment Agenda,

During the discussions, Minister Moorosi highlighted the transformative contribution of the UN-India Development Partnership Fund towards strengthening Lesotho’s digital infrastructure. Through the initiative, the Fund supported the upgrade of High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems, HPC awareness campaigns, and capacity-building programmes in Lesotho.

She noted that the support has laid a strong foundation for the country’s ability to host, process and govern its own digital public infrastructure.

The Minister also requested that the initiative be recognised as a successful example of South-South cooperation within the Secretary-General’s Data Strategy and the broader UN 2.0 framework, while acknowledging India’s contribution through the partnership mechanism.

Minister Moorosi further presented Lesotho’s ambition to position itself as an attractive destination for data centre investment, targeting hyperscalers, regional operators and development finance institutions.

The EOSG was requested to formally note the initiative within the Secretary-General’s strategic planning processes. The Minister also proposed that Lesotho’s data centre investment programme be considered as a demonstration case within the Secretary-General’s Data Strategy and UN 2.0 digital infrastructure initiatives, in a move aimed at amplifying the country’s efforts at the global level.
