MOPELI SEES DIGITAL ROADSHOW BOOSTING LESOTHO’S MEDIA TRANSFORMATION

Maseru, April.20 — The Director of the Lesotho News Agency (LENA), Ms. Moroa Mopeli said that Lesotho stands to gain significantly in strengthening its media industry as it hosts the 64th Council Meeting of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation alongside the Commonwealth Digital Roadshow.

In an interview on the sidelines of the event in Maseru, Ms. Mopeli noted that the gathering comes at a critical time when the media landscape is rapidly evolving towards digital platforms.

She said the convergence of telecommunications and media presents an opportunity for local media houses to reposition themselves within the digital ecosystem.

‘This event is not only about telecommunications but also about how information is created, packaged and shared. As media practitioners, we are part of this transformation and it is important that we adapt accordingly, she said.

Ms. Mopeli also highlighted that the Commonwealth Digital Roadshow in particular offers valuable exposure to new technologies and global best practices in digital communication.

She said that through engagements with international experts and stakeholders, local journalists and media institutions can enhance their skills in areas such as digital storytelling, multimedia reporting and audience engagement.

The LENA Director further indicated that her organisation is looking to leverage insights from the event to improve its operations, especially in adopting innovative tools that will expand its reach and efficiency in news dissemination.

‘We are keen to explore partnerships and training opportunities that will strengthen our capacity as a national news agency. This is a platform to learn and to connect,’ she added.

On policy expectations, Ms. Mopeli expressed hope that deliberations will emphasize the need for inclusive digital development, including improved access to affordable internet and support for credible journalism in the digital age.

She stressed that a supportive digital environment is essential for the growth of the media sector and for ensuring that citizens continue to receive accurate and timely information.

Ms. Mopeli also encouraged local media practitioners to actively engage in the activities of the roadshow and take advantage of the knowledge-sharing opportunities available.

‘The future of media is digital and we must equip ourselves with the necessary tools and skills to remain relevant,’she said.

Lesotho is the first African country to host the Commonwealth Digital Roadshow, a development expected to boost the country’s visibility and contribute to the growth of its digital and media sectors.
