Maseru, May 22 — Acting Commissioner of Police, Dr. Mahlape Morai has called on Basotho and everybody residing in the country to surrender illegal firearms to the police in the next 14 days starting May 21 to June 05.
She made this call under the campaign called Silence of guns in the Kingdom of Lesotho which she said is aimed at giving opportunity for people who have illegal firearms to hand them over to their nearest police station or to their Chiefs without being arrested. She said that those who surrender will not need to provide their identity during such an exercise.
She said that this has been triggered by the high rate that Basotho have illegal guns which she said are used to commit criminal activities. She explained that everyday people are arrested for illegal possession of firearms while people are killed every week.
She said that they are expecting not only illegal firearms to be surrendered but ammunition as well as any illegal weapons saying that those who will fail to hand over during the 14 days will be arrested and dealt with lawfully.
