Mokhotlong, — About 24 pregnant ewes are reported to have died after being trapped by snow and bitten by dogs at Hohobeng in the Makhoaba area, Mokhotlong.
In a brief interview with the Makhoaba Community Councillor Mr. Teboho Lehobo, said the ewes were on Tuesday morning found dead with intestines out and one of them also had a lamb inside which indicated they were pregnant.
He said the sheep belonged to one resident of Makhoaba, Mr. Realeboha Nthoana adding that the incident occurred at a cattle post closer to the village.
Mr. Lehobo alleged that the shepherds left the small stock at the post and came home following the recent snowfall alert issued by the Lesotho Meteorology Service warning the public about the snowfall and extreme cold temperatures.
The Community Councillor highlighted that this was the first incident to happen in the area from snowfall pointing out it is of great loss to the farmer.
The incident has also been reported to the District Disaster Management Authority (DMA) Office in Mokhotlong on Tuesday.
The snowfall was experienced in highlands districts including Mokhotlong since Sunday night until Monday.
