Maseru, Mar. 25 — The Advocates for the Supremacy of the Constitution otherwise Section 2 has challenged the recent decision by the Lesotho Electricity and Water Authority (LEWA) on the proposed increase in electricity tariffs by the Lesotho Electricity Company (LEC).
The proposed increase which shall be effective from April 01 this year is for both energy (except lifeline) and maximum demand by 9.6 percent for all customer categories and lifeline tariff by 5.0 percent.
In their letter, SECTION 2 said that they find it imperative to express their firm rejection of this decision and to emphasize their two commitments which are upholding principles of transparency, accountability and fairness in matters concerning public interest, particularly in the realm of utility tariffs.
They said that they have participated in a presentation to LEWA earlier this year, where-in they raised significant concerns regarding the lack of transparency and accountability in the tariff setting process saying that they highlighted the absence of LEC’s latest audited financial statements, which are essential for assessing the justification of any proposed tariff increases.
