THAMAE VILLAGE STRENGTHENS COMMUNITY EFFORTS TO FURTHER REDUCE CRIME

MASERU — The community Chief of Ha-Thamae, Mr. Makae Ramakau, says traditional leaders, community policing structures and the police will work closely together in 2026 to further reduce Crime in the village.

In an interview with the Agency on prevention initiatives of crime issues, Chief Ramakau said community policing committees have been renewed and strengthened to improve cooperation among all stakeholders.

He stressed that all residents under the leadership of Chief Tahleho Lichaba must work together to ensure safety and security in the village.

He said authorities will collaborate with business owners to ensure they comply with their licence requirements, including closing operating hours.

Chief Ramakau noted that crime in Thamae often occur at businesses that operate late into the night, particularly bars.

He added that shop owners will also be monitored to ensure they do not sell alcohol or cigarettes to children under the age of 18.

As part of crime prevention efforts, Chief Ramakau said community gatherings have been organised to warn young people about the dangers of drug abuse.

He further explained that, since most crimes are committed by young people, youth committees will be established. He said individuals suspected of possessing illegal substances will be handed over to the police for investigation.

Chief Ramakau also revealed plans to install boom gates at entrances to the village to monitor vehicles entering and leaving the area.

“The initiative will enhance safety, help reduce crime and create employment opportunities for young people,” he emphasised.

This follows remarks by the Traditional Chief of Thamae, Mr. Tahleho Lichaba, who told the agency that crime in the village has declined compared to previous years due to improved cooperation between the community and law enforcement.
