Maseru, March 04 — In the process of reopening the house of the Senate some Senators expressed their concerns about the standard of living of Basotho and struggles they are facing in and outside of the country.
Speaking in the Senate, Mr Seeiso Bereng Seeiso, the Principal Chief of Matsieng mentioned that he would like to be informed on what the government is doing in making sure that Basotho are saved from poverty and bad working conditions.
Adding to his concern, Senator ‘Makholu Moshoeshoe mentioned that she feels the budget increase could really help in the improvement of the economy if the government reconsiders it from their perspective.
In addressing of some of the concerns, the Minister of Labour and Employment Mr. Ts’eliso Mokhosi particularly addressed the issue of house keepers working in South Africa and Lesotho that he is aware of their challenges, he thus encouraged the use of registered and well regulated means so that whenever they encounter problems in their workplaces, that can easily be addressed via such agencies.
“I would like to inform the house that at the international Labour Conference, the Biological Hazard in the Working Environment Convention 192 and Biological Hazard in the Working Environment 209 were initiated as laws to create protection of workers (occupational Safety Act) and to stop the rising threats made to our people,” Mr. Mokhosi said.
The senators were addressed by the Minister of Labour and Empowerment in relation to bad working conditions, convention and recommendations approved and recognised by session of the international labour conference.
