TRADE UNION TO STAGE PRO-WORKER PROCESSION TO PRIME MINISTER

Maseru, Sept. 04 — Trade Unions that include Independent Democratic Union of Lesotho (IDUL), United Textile Employees (UNITE), Lesotho Workers Association (LEWA) and National Clothing Textile and Allied Workers Union (NACTWU), Construction, Mining and Quarrying (CMQ) in collaboration with Civil Organisations held a meeting on Thursday about the procession to the Prime Minister that will be on September 17, 2025.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Selong Senohe from UNITE said the purpose of the procession is to call for action on the crisis of tariffs, violation of the freedom of association, traditional chiefs undervalued pillars of governance and impending  African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) renewal set to expire in September 2025.

He stated that AGOA has been the backbone of Lesotho’s textile exports, job creation and the uncertainty of its renewal has already led to reduced orders and factory closures.

Mr. Senohe added that they call on the government of Lesotho and US legislators to urgently secure an extension of AGOA under fair and inclusive terms.
