UNSPOKEN PAIN BEHIND MEN’S ABUSE

Maseru, Aug. 26 — Despite the fact that women are usually protected by laws and society against Gender Based Violence (GBV), some men facing domestic violence remain unspoken for the pain they go through.

Reports from the Child and Gender Protection Unit (CGPU) Maseru urban, indicates that about 13 percent of men report domestic violence and other related forms of abuse monthly, whereas the Manup Association indicates that men’s rights are violated by the legal systems of the country which give women first priority.

Speaking in an interview with the Agency, the Officer Commanding Maseru Central CGPU Inspector Maphoka Khoeli said few men report incidents of abuse and disputes between their female partners but are hesitant to open cases in courts of law due to cultural norms, stigmatisation and fear of being humiliated.

She said some men usually report cases of abusive language and physical abuse from their partners, saying the majority of men complain about women who fail to provide financial support to their children.
