ABOUT M30 MILLION TO ENABLE ACCESSIBILITY

MOHALE’S HOEK, Apr. 13 — The Government of Lesotho is expected to spend about M30 million on the construction of a footbridge at Maphutseng Ha-Mootsinyane and on rehabilitation of the gravel road from Mesitsaneng to Ha-Ts’epo.

The Minister of Public Works and Transport, Mr. Matjato Moteane, disclosed this at a public gathering where he introduced Founda Construction Engineering (Pty) Ltd, the company awarded the tender for the projects.

Mr. Moteane urged the contractor to work harmoniously with the community and encouraged villagers to engage in farming projects, making use of the abundant water from the Maphuts’eng River.

He further stated that ministers have been tasked by the Prime Minister to ensure that development reaches all constituencies, regardless of their political affiliation.

He also called on the contractor to maintain transparency during the recruitment process.

In addition, Mr. Moteane appealed to the Roads Directorate Director, Mr. Teboho Mokhoane, to ensure that payments to the contractor are not delayed due to minor issues.

Speaking at the same event, the Minister of Law and Justice, Mr. Richard Ramoeletsi, commended the government for the initiative, noting that villagers from Ha-Mootsinyane and surrounding areas have faced challenges for a long time.

Minister Ramoeletsi urged the contractor to avoid recruiting workers based on political affiliations.

The Member of Parliament for Mekaling Constituency No. 62, Mr. Thabiso Lekitla, echoed similar sentiments, warning contractors against being influenced by politicians who may provide lists of preferred candidates for employment.

He highlighted that the project would benefit many villages, pointing out that several people have drowned in the Maphuts’eng River, including a recent case involving a 14-year-old girl and her nine-month-old sibling.

On behalf of the community, Mr. Berente Sekutoana expressed appreciation to the government for bringing development to the area.

He said villagers face difficulties crossing the river during the rainy season when travelling to Mohale’s Hoek town for daily needs.

Mr. Sekutoana also appealed for the provision of electricity in the village.

The construction of the footbridge and rehabilitation of the road are expected to be completed in April 2027.
