Maseru, Feb. 15 — The growing proximity between liquor stores and pharmacies has sparked concerns following a surge in reported cases of alcohol and drug abuse among young people in various communities.
Miss. Mphonyane Mofokeng, the Founder of the Anti Drug Abuse Association of Lesotho (ADAAL), expressed apprehension over the increasing number of pharmacies situated near liquor stores, citing findings from ADAAL’s research that suggest collaboration between the two in supplying drug substances, including alcohol and drugs.
She highlighted instances where alcohol is combined with certain medications available at pharmacies, facilitating easy access for young individuals.
“Pharmacists have recognized this opportunity and strategically positioned pharmacies near liquor stores to facilitate constant access to alcohol,” she remarked.
Ms. Mofokeng observed that this trend persists even in unconventional locations, prompting questions about targeted profits. Despite the challenges, she noted collaborative efforts with other concerned organizations like ADAAL to address the issue.
