COMMUNITY RADIO FACES AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE

 

Qacha’sNek, Oct.01—It has now been 12 days since Qacha’s Nek Community Radio—Souru FM—fell silent, its regular programming replaced by an endless loop of music. 

A damaged recording machine, suspected to have been fried during recent power outages caused by snowfall, has brought the station to a standstill. 

For a station built on community spirit, this disruption is more than technical—it’s a heartbreaking pause in a growing connection with listeners.

Under the 2022 Broadcasting Code, Section 26 (4) & (5), a broadcaster must ensure that recording devices are fully operational before any program airs. Without this, Souru FM is unable to broadcast its hallmark current affairs and call-in shows, leaving a void in local news coverage…
