DDMT REVIVES MATEBENG DISASTER TEAMS

Qacha’s Nek, May.19 — In a bid to boost community resilience against natural hazards, the District Disaster Management Team (DDMT), with support from the Lesotho Red Cross Society (LRCS), has revived the Matebeng Village Disaster Management Teams (VDMTs) across three villages: Matebeng, Mosamaqa, and Maphotong.

This revival is grounded in the Disaster Management Act of 1997 and the national Disaster Management Manual, which empower VDMTs to promote public awareness, strengthen disaster preparedness, encourage community collaboration, and assist in humanitarian response efforts.

According to Mrs. ‘Mats’itso Motemekoane, the District Disaster Manager under the Disaster Management Authority (DMA) and also DDMT Secretary, 33 new members were elected to serve across the villages and will soon undergo intensive capacity-building sessions.

“This revival was necessary because some members had left due to various reasons. These teams are a critical arm in our strategy to build disaster-resilient communities,” said Mrs.Motemekoane, adding: “This marks the beginning of our long-term collaboration on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in these villages. . . .
