EDUCATION ON DENTAL HEALTH FACES CHALLENGES

Botha-Bothe, Aug. 27 — Dental Therapist Mr. Peter Dziva has highlighted the lack of health care education among school children, particularly in primary and high schools.

Mr. Dziva has urged the Ministry of Health to allow professionals to visit schools and provide essential dental health education.

In an interview with the Agency following an oral health awareness campaign at St. Peter’s Primary and High School, Mr. Dziva expressed concern over limited knowledge many children have about basic dental hygiene, such as brushing their teeth.

“During the dental check-up conducted on all the pupils, I found that nearly half of them have dental caries, especially those living in urban areas. While children in rural areas also suffer from dental caries, the incidence is not as high as in urban areas,” he explained.
