EU SUPPORTS WFP DISASTER PREPAREDNESS IN SOUTHERN AFRICA

Maseru, Aug.12 — The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has welcomed a €3 million contribution from the European Union (EU) to boost disaster preparedness in Malawi, Madagascar, Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Launched on Monday in Nacala, Mozambique the two-year project, “Strengthening SADC Preparedness: Supporting SHOC for Effective Disaster Response” is a partnership between WFP and the SADC Humanitarian and Emergency Operations Centre (SHOC).

The project will among others, strengthen cross-border movement of humanitarian supplies, pre-position relief items in strategic locations and enhance search and rescue capacity.

Additionally it includes training regional emergency response teams, improving data systems & artificial intelligence tools for early action as well as establishing a new regional crisis fund for rapid deployment of resources.
