GOVERNMENT WELCOME CHINA’S DECISION TO LIFT WOOL IMPORT RESTRICTIONS

Maseru, May 29 — The Government of Lesotho has welcomed the decision by the Government of the People’s Republic of China to officially lift temporary import restrictions on wool originating from Lesotho, describing the move as a major relief for Basotho farmers and the agricultural sector.

In an interview with the Agency on Friday, the Government Spokesperson Mr. Boitelo Rabele stated that the development marks an important breakthrough following months of diplomatic engagements and technical consultations between the two countries.

Mr. Rabele explained that the restrictions were imposed after concerns over the outbreak of Foot-and-Mouth Disease which disrupted wool exports and negatively affected the livelihoods of many Basotho farmers.

He noted that the ban also resulted in delays and blockages in the transportation of Lesotho wool through the Republic of South Africa, affecting consignments estimated at over M100 million.

“The lifting of these restrictions is welcome news for wool producers, traders and the country’s economy as a whole. It restores confidence in Lesotho’s agricultural exports and demonstrates the strength of the relations between Lesotho and China,” said Mr. Rabele.

He further revealed that wool consignments which had been held at South African ports have since been released and that payments to farmers have already started.

According to Mr. Rabele, the breakthrough follows sustained engagements between the Government of Lesotho and relevant Chinese authorities to address all outstanding issues that had hindered exports.

He said that the decision was officially confirmed through a joint announcement issued by the General Administration of Customs of China together with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China on May 26.

Mr. Rabele expressed appreciation to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Lesotho for its cooperation and constructive engagement throughout the process.

He also commended wool and mohair producers’ associations as well as officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition for their commitment in ensuring the matter was resolved.

“The Government remains committed to safeguarding the interests of Basotho farmers, strengthening agricultural trade relations and ensuring compliance with international animal health and export standards,” he added.

The wool and mohair industry remains one of Lesotho’s key agricultural export sectors and a major source of income for thousands of rural households across the country.
