HA MATLALI TO LEBAKENG ROAD UPGRADE SET TO BOOST ACCESS, DEVELOPMENT

Maseru, Jan. 21 — The Roads Directorate is set to implement the Ha Matlali to Mosenekeng and Lebakeng Road Upgrade Project, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at improving access and socio-economic development in the Qacha’s Nek and Thaba Tseka districts.

According to Roads Directorate Director General (DG), Mr. Teboho Mokhoane, the project covers approximately 45 kilometres stretch connecting Ha Matlali, Mosenekeng and Lebakeng to Qacha’s Nek town via the A4 Road, including a 1.4 kilometre access road to Melikane Combined School.

He said currently the road is an un-engineered gravel surface ending at the Lebakeng Clinic parking area, and will be upgraded to bitumen standard over a period of 48 months at a total cost of M1.4 billion, inclusive of VAT and contingencies.

He said it is classified as a Secondary Connector Road, adding that the project is designed to improve access to rural and remote communities while strengthening connectivity between districts.

Mr. Mokhoane said cnce completed, the project is expected to benefit about 1,777 households, serving an estimated population of 8,652 people.

It will also enhance access to schools and health facilities, including Melikane Combined School, several primary schools, Melikane and Libobeng clinics, and Qacha’s Nek Hospital.

According to the Project Country Manager, Mr. Cao Xuefey the project is an important infrastructure investment for Qacha’s Nek district , and is fully committed to delivering it in accordance with the contract, applicable standards and local requirements.

He said they are looking forward to working closely with the employer and all other stakeholders to ensure the successful and timely implementation of the project.

The upgrade is anticipated to stimulate economic activity by improving market access for wool and mohair farmers, enabling year round access to the Lebakeng Airstrip, and facilitating the movement of goods and services. It is also expected to support tourism activities such as hiking, mountain biking, 4×4 trails, pony trekking and eco-tourism.

Key components of the project include the construction of four bridges across the Tsoelike, Lijabatho, Melikane and Senqu rivers, improved drainage systems, road signage, traffic markings, bus bays and road reserve markers.

Safety, environmental and social concerns will be addressed through proper road design, drainage and the construction of a bridge across the Senqu River.

The Ha Matlali to Mosenekeng and Lebakeng Road Upgrade Project is regarded as a strategic investment that will enhance accessibility, safety, service delivery and regional integration, while contributing to poverty reduction in one of Lesotho’s most remote areas.
