HEAVY HAIL STONES DESTROY ORCHARDS

Mohale’s Hoek, Dec. 15 — Chief Hlomelang Teane of Shalane confirmed on Friday that heavy hail storm which attacked his village and Lithipeng has destroyed his orchard of 2 hectares on Thursday afternoon.

Mr. Teane, who  is selling apples to nearby villages and some businesses in town, noted that the hail destroyed windows of both cars and houses.

He noted that he has incurred great loss, pinning the blame on Basotho who seem to have shifted from their customs.

Chief Teane who indicated that it is their first time to be attacked by such hail which he noted was the size of a golf ball, stated that he will call a public gathering on Sunday to discuss ways in which such occurrences could be dealt with by Basotho who have indigenous knowledge regarding the prevention of such occurrences.

Furthermore, another villager whose crops have been affected, Mr. Monts’o Ramalefane noted that the hail has also cracked the windows of his vehicles and massively destroyed his orchard of watermelons.
