MASERU — As the world celebrates international week of deaf people, Sign Language Interpreters Association for the deaf Lesotho (SLIADL) also commemorates this week by raising awareness about deaf people and the importance of sign language.
During an interview with the agency, Ms. Mathotse Mojaje, vice public relations officer OF SLIADL said this week, the association raises awareness for deaf people and their rights.
Ms. Mojaje said activities held during the week are aimed at supporting deaf people and sign language interpretation and ensuring their full participation in different events.

During an interview with the agency, Kelebohile Mavuso from SLIADL mentioned that Lesotho recognised sign language as an official language however deaf people continue to experience difficulties in public institutions such as hospitals and banks where communication barriers limit their access to essential services as there are no interpreters in public institutions.
He appealed for introduction of sign language in school curriculum across all districts pointing out that currently only Mafeteng and Leribe have such programs.
“Every child should have the opportunity to learn sign language in their nearby schools,” he said. . .
