IT NEVER RAINS BUT POURS IN BOROKHOANENG

MASERU –Just a month after devastating flash floods left families in crisis, Borokhoaneng residents faced another round of morning rains on Thursday.

Homes were inundated with water, leaving furniture floating and streets impassable as trapped water turned premises into temporary mini-dams.

The situation has caused immense distress for local residents trying to recover from earlier deluges.

The devastated resident, Mr. Tefo Mokorosi described his shock early in the morning, stepping straight out of his bed into deep water.

He had already been sleeping in an old vehicle to avoid previous floodwaters.

Ms. Malipuo Libe said she was woken by her grandson, who told her he was soaking in water on his mattress saying with the children’s bed completely drenched, she had to squeeze herself and two grandchildren onto a three-quarter bed.

She added that because the morning rainfall did not seem heavy, she never expected the water to breach their homes again.

Another Mrs. ‘Mabatho Rampai expressed deep frustration, stating that their houses are still damp from previous floods, saying this repeated inundation a form of “great torture”.

She highlighted that the formation of dark rain clouds now triggers severe fear and stress, as they never know if they will be flooded out of their homes once again.

Families continue to appeal for urgent, sustainable assistance and improved flood defenses to avoid continued property damage.

With ground saturation exacerbating the flooding, communities in low-lying areas like Borokhoaneng, Mejametalana (Ha-Ts’iu) and Motimposo remain highly vulnerable.

These recurring floods highlight the area’s vulnerability to extreme weather and climate change, leaving residents desperate for permanent solutions.

Meanwhile following previous devastating flood events in and around the capital, the government emergency aid was dispatched by the Disaster Management Authority (DMA) in collaboration with Lesotho Red Cross Society and World Vision Lesotho to provide mattresses, blankets and food parcels.
