SEMPHETENYANE RESIDENTS AWAIT ROAD CONSTRUCTION

Maseru, June 12 — Residents of Semphetenyane say they are curiously waiting for work to begin after a crushed stones and machine was delivered to the area, but concerns remain as road construction work has not yet began.

Speaking with the Agency, Chief Makoanyane Matsoso of Semphetenyane said the crushed stones has already been delivered and moved from Ha-Pita Circle to the village Khotla, although it has not yet reached Kofi Annan, where it is also expected to operate.

He explained that residents were informed that actual road construction would commence after the crushed stones had been deployed to all designated areas.

However, he noted that he does not know when that process will be completed.

Chief Makoanyane further stated that he has not yet made any formal follow ups regarding the progress of the project, saying he intends to give the contractors and relevant authorities the remainder of the week before seeking updates on Monday.

He added that he had expected the councillor to provide guidance on the next steps now that the crusher has arrived.

Meanwhile, taxi driver Mr. Ntaote Ntaote said he had seen the machinery and initially assumed road works were about to begin, but the equipment has remained parked at Lithoteng throughout the day without any visible activity.

He expressed frustration, saying the crushed stones that have been left on the road for nearly a week are making travel difficult.

He said, the situation is causing traffic congestion and delays for motorists and public transport operation.

Community member Mrs. Mateboho Molieleng said she was somewhat encouraged by the arrival of the crusher, describing it as a sign of progress.

However, she stressed that the road project should have been completed by now.

She said residents are hopeful that work will begin soon as they continue waiting for the tarred road, which they say has been promised for next year.

Residents of Semphetenyane recently staged protests and road blockades, demanding urgent intervention from authorities and the commencement of rehabilitation works.

The arrival of construction equipment has raised hopes among residents, although many remain concerned about delays in the actual start of the project.
