Leribe, Sept. 25 — District Administrator Leribe says as the government has approved sign language as official language, it is important that it is included in all schools.
This Mr. Letsema Khalanyane said at the International Celebration Week for the Deaf held at District Administrator’s premises Hlotse in Leribe on Thursday.
The celebration was organised by St. Paul School for the Deaf, Mount Royal Primary and High Schools under the theme, ‘No Human Rights without Sign Language.’
He said sign language should be a concern for all schools so as to lift off the high number of pupils registered with St. Paul School for the Deaf.
In addition, he said deaf pupils from as far as Qacha’s Nek and Mafeteng register with St.Paul as they have no other options.


Moreover, he reminded that the school was registered in the 1980’s by a Roman Catholic Church, saying others have to copy the same strategy for the benefit of deaf people.
He indicated that his office and Ministry of Education and Training to make sure that sign language is inclusive in all schools.
District Administrator said also people in all categories have to learn sign language, citing government offices, hospitals and private offices so as to assist deaf people.
Speaking on behalf of Ministry of Education and Training, Special Education Inspector Mrs. ‘Mateboho Senekale said this is a critical time in celebrating Deaf Awareness week.
She said such an event is an indication that inclusive education development is being attained.
Mrs. Senekale expressed his gratitude to the government of Lesotho by officialising sign language in August this year. . . .
