Maseru, Aug. 01 — As part of efforts to increase public awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and child, the Ministry of Health will observe breastfeeding week from August 16 in Thaba-Bosiu.
This was disclosed by Ministry of Health Nutrition Manager Ms. Lisemelo Seheri in an interview on Thursday where she said that this year’s theme is “Closing the gap: Breastfeeding support for all” saying that the campaign will highlight the ways that families, communities, societies, and healthcare professionals can support all breastfeeding mothers while celebrating them in all of their diversity and throughout their breastfeeding journeys.
She said that breastfeeding is essential for the sustainable development of a child as it enhances nutrition, guarantees food security, and lessens inequality both internationally and domestically.
“All forms of child malnutrition, including wasting and obesity, can be avoided by nursing a child till he or she is two years old. Again, breastfeeding also serves as a baby’s first vaccination, shielding them from a variety of common childhood ailments,” she said.
