LHDA EMPOWERS COMMUNITIES THROUGH SKILLS ACCREDITATION, TOURISM TRAINING

Maseru — The Lesotho Highlands Development Authority (LHDA) hosted a graduation ceremony for participants in its Skills Testing and Accreditation Programme alongside the Community-Based Tourism training initiative aimed at empowering communities through certified skills and sustainable tourism development in Katse on Thursday.

In his opening remarks, on behalf of the Chief Executive of the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority Mr. Nts’oli Maiketso said that the Skills Testing and Accreditation Programme as a key driver of sustainable development and job creation within project-affected communities.

He indicated that the initiative is also described as a transformative intervention addressing the gap in formal certification among skilled community members.

Mr. Maiketso also reaffirms LHDA’s commitment to inclusive growth, skills development and long-term community empowerment, encouraging graduates to utilize their newly acquired competencies to improve their livelihoods and contribute meaningfully to national development.

On the other hand, Mr. Limpho Moeko from LHDA said that the purpose of the event is to recognise and certify individuals who have successfully undergone training and skills assessment in various trades, while also promoting community participation in tourism activities linked to the Lesotho Highlands Water Project.

He explained that the Skills Testing and Accreditation Programme, launched in 2025 in collaboration with the Technical and Vocational Education Department (TVED) under the Ministry of Education and Training, is designed to enhance employability among youth and adults in project areas.

He noted that many individuals previously lacked formal certification despite having practical skills, which limited their employment opportunities and this initiative provides an opportunity for candidates to be assessed on the skills they already possess.

Meanwhile, on behalf of the Ministry of Education and Training through the TVED department Mr. Thabang Mokotjo said that the vocational sector is one of the most undermined sectors, yet it holds significant potential for job creation.

He mentioned that strengthening this sector through increased investment, skills development programmes, and policy support could empower young people with practical skills, reduce unemployment, and promote sustainable economic growth.

Upon successful evaluation, they receive nationally recognised certification, which is also valid across the SADC region.
