STRAY LIVESTOCK DAMAGES CEMETERIES IN LIPHOKOANENG

Berea, March 26 — Stray livestock continues to cause concern in Liphokoaneng, Berea as animals roam freely and damage graves in local cemeteries, raising questions about community respect and the need for protective measures.

Mrs. Mamakhooa Makhooa a councilor in the area, highlighted that the problem has persisted for some time, describing it as both disrespectful and distressing for families who have lost loved ones.

She said the destruction of graves not only affects bereaved families emotionally but also undermines the community’s efforts to maintain orderly burial sites.

The councilor noted that community members are now exploring solutions, including fencing cemeteries, to prevent livestock from grazing in these sensitive areas. She added that coordination with local authorities is necessary to ensure that the measures are effective and sustainable.

Mrs. Makhooa also stated that the local headman was made aware of the situation, but she has not yet received feedback regarding any decisions taken about individuals who allow their livestock to graze in graveyards.

She urged residents to take responsibility for their animals and work with authorities to safeguard cemeteries.
