LERIBE, July 27 – The late founder of Mahlapese Lodge, Ms. Mats’eliso Mokuoane, has been remembered as a compassionate businesswoman whose commitment to community service and tourism development touched many lives in Leribe.
Ms. Mokuoane passed away on July 23.
Residents of Hlotse say her death has left a huge gap in the district, describing her as a woman who always extended a helping hand to those in need.
Community members said she supported bereaved families, churches and local tourism initiatives without expecting anything in return.
In an earlier interview with the agency, Ms. Mokuoane said she employed people from vulnerable households and equipped them with hospitality skills to improve their chances of securing jobs in the tourism industry.
She explained that many of the workers she trained later found employment in hotels and restaurants both within Lesotho and abroad.
Ms. Mokuoane said her work was driven by passion and a desire to improve standards in the tourism sector by continuously developing her lodge to match modern hospitality trends.
One of her former employees, who requested anonymity, said Ms. Mokuoane supported her during the burial of her brother when she could not afford the costs.
The former employee said Ms. Mokuoane provided food, a coffin and assisted with all the funeral arrangements, describing her as a kind-hearted person who always cared for others.
Apart from being a traditional healer, Ms. Mokuoane was actively involved in church work and regularly offered assistance to religious organisations.
Altar Worship House Pastor, Ms. Masechaba Makamane, said Ms. Mokuoane supported the church by providing equipment for conferences and offering accommodation and meals at her lodge free of charge.
She said Ms. Mokuoane created a welcoming environment for church members and would be remembered for her generosity and dedication to serving others.
Ms. Mokuoane also played an active role in promoting tourism in Leribe and across Lesotho, with the aim of creating business opportunities and contributing to the growth of the sector.
Residents said they have lost an icon who upheld integrity and worked tirelessly to promote tourism while supporting the community.
They said although her death came early, her legacy of compassion, generosity and service will continue to inspire many.
A memorial service for Ms. Mats’eliso Mokuoane will be held on Thursday at Leribe English Medium School.
