QACHA’S NEK — Machabeng Government Hospital joined the global community today in commemorating World Patient Safety Day with a series of awareness activities, community engagement and professional training sessions.
The annual observance, led by the World Health Organization (WHO) on September 17, highlights the importance of safe and quality care.
Speaking to the Agency, Nurse Khotso Tsela said this year’s theme, “Safe care for every newborn and every child,” emphasizes protecting children both in health facilities and at home.
She stressed that patient safety is not only a hospital issue but also a household responsibility.
She urged parents and caregivers to make homes safe by preventing accidents, keeping dangerous chemicals like paraffin and medicines out of reach and ensuring that children are not exposed to open fires, hot water, or unsafe surroundings.
“When households are safe, children are less likely to suffer burns or ingest harmful substances. If injuries occur, they should be taken immediately to a health facility, where care must be provided in a safe, child-friendly environment,” she explained. . . .
