Botha-Bothe, Sept. 15 — Minister of Education and Training, Professor Ntoi Rapapa, has urged children to remain in school and complete their studies, warning them against entering into marriage at a young age.
Prof. Rapapa was speaking during his visit to Rehauhetsoe Combined Academy yesterday, where he addressed learners on the importance of education and encouraged them to prioritise their studies.
He told the learners that there was no rush to get married, as marriage could wait while they completed their education.
“Being at school and doing well in class is something that one can pride themselves in, but getting married at a young age can cause problems for you. Remember, there is no rush in getting married. Marriage can wait for you while you finish school because you can stay married your whole life, but for school, it may not be like that,” he said.
Addressing the boys, Prof. Rapapa urged them to wait until they reach the age of 18 before getting married and called on them to allow girls to also reach 18 before entering into marriage.
“For you, my boys, please, let us wait until we are 18 to get married. Let us also allow these girls to reach 18 before you marry them. Also remember, when you get married, you are expected to have children. How will you take care of a baby when you are also a child yourself?” he said.
Pro. Rapapa also warned parents against facilitating or supporting marriages involving children under the age of 18, saying those found to be accomplices would face arrest.
He said some parents even celebrate when their children marry at a young age, urging them instead to take responsibility for preventing child marriage.
“You will hear a parent ululating and saying their son married a fresh girl. We will arrest you as a parent, your son, even if they are under the age of 18, and send them to juvenile correctional services,” he said.
“Let us make it our responsibility as parents to stop child marriage,” he said.
During the visit, Prof. Rapapa also inspected the construction of a science laboratory on the school premises and the school’s orchard. He further engaged with teachers and advised them to work hard and create a safe haven where children can trust them with the challenges they face.
He later proceeded to the District Education Office, where he met with education officers. He encouraged them to remain positive despite challenges and urged them to serve teachers with love and kindness.
“I have heard that some officers insult and speak harshly to teachers when they come to ask for services and guidance and also during school inspections. If I find that it is true, definitely someone will have to account for that,” he said.
The Ministry of Education and Training is expected to hand over more schools in the Motete Constituency before winter next year.
