Maseru, Sept. 21 — The Millennium Challenge Account-Lesotho II (MCA-Lesotho II) has revealed its plans to support Lesotho in achieving equitable and sustainable economic growth. This initiative was outlined by MCA-Lesotho II Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. ‘Mannana Phalatse, in a report presented to the Senate.
In her report, Mrs. Phalatse explained that the Lesotho Health and Horticulture Compact aims to increase access to quality healthcare, foster equitable business development, and promote investment in high-value crop production. The compact is designed to boost profitability and formal employment, particularly for women- and youth-owned enterprises.
She emphasised that the program addresses unique challenges faced by women and youth, including providing better legal protections in land tenure, as well as offering skills training and business development opportunities.
The compact’s primary focus at present is on strengthening the health system by upgrading an initial network of primary healthcare facilities into centers of excellence. Additionally, a skills audit of health workers across districts is underway to align staffing with the needs of the new Primary Health Centres and to support the Ministry of Health and public services in staff deployment.
Senator Mawinnie Kannetsi commended MCA-Lesotho’s efforts in targeting the health sector. She noted that improving health services across the country’s challenging terrain is essential, expressing hopes that the compact will receive the necessary backing to enhance healthcare delivery for all Basotho.
