MIXED FEELINGS ON PLASTIC LEVY

Maseru, Feb. 25 — Following the announcement by the Minister of Finance and Development Planning that the government has implemented plastic levy, members of the public have shown mixed feelings on the matter.

Dr. Rets’elisitsoe Matlanyane had said the levy is designed to discourage the use of plastic bags which are a major source of pollution. She had said it is also to promote the production of eco-friendly alternatives by Basotho entrepreneurs.

Speaking in an interview, one Mr. Thabo Khutlang said that it is a good move especially as Basotho litter everywhere even in areas where there are garbage bins. He said that it is high time that Lesotho, like other countries, becomes clean and tidy.

He said that as part of job creation, the government should help small companies that have already started recycling, saying that with plastic there are so many products that can be made. AT/TL
