Maseru, June 16 — Maseru Municipal Council (MMC) is in the process of relocating its dumpsite based at Ha Ts’osane to Ts’oeneng.
According to MMC Public Relations Manager, Mrs. Makatleho Mosala, the above will be achieved through the establishment of a comprehensive project that includes promotion of circular economy and sustainable development through various contract models such as Design, Build, Finance, Operate, Maintain and Transfer.
She said the primary objective of this project is to improve management of solid waste within the Municipal area using best available technology and best environmental practices in line with local circumstances without compromising compliance to national laws and regulations as well as best global practices.
She said MMC is therefore intending to find a company within six months that will implement the above, indicating that it is expected to rehabilitate Ts’osane dump site.
She indicated that the design on how Ts’osane dumpsite is expected to look like after rehabilitation has already been made.
She further stated that the mismanagement of Ts’osane dumpsite due to limited resources poses health and fire risks, making an example that there is evidence of untreated leachate upstream of the Maqalika dam thus it is imperative to address this problem holistically in line with the vision of the government to rehabilitate and transform the dumpsite.
“MMC is responsible for providing municipal and civic services to the citizens of Maseru, including integrated solid waste management within its jurisdiction,” she stressed, hence the establishment of the above mentioned project.
Meanwhile the community of Ts’osane has for years been complaining of the mismanagement of the dumpsite and that it poses health risks.
