Berea, Aug. 04 — Lioli, Maroala and Mats’ekha have finally welcomed Mr. Jonase Mokete who assumed duty as the new Berea District Administrator (DA).
Mr. Mokete who hails from Sebetia, Ha Phats’oa in Mosalemane Constituency, succeeds Mr. Phahlane Makoko whose contract expired on June 30.
In his remarks, Mr. Mokete said although he is new in the office, he is quite aware of the challenges faced by the district in various sectors of government services and production.
He highlighted that congestion at the passport office is among the issues which need to be addressed, citing that people spend sleepless nights waiting for services.
Mr. Mokete added that the terrain of Berea is yet another issue whereby large portions of the district stretch to the foothills with a lot of population, but accessibility to such places remains a critical challenge leaving many people isolated from the rest of the district.
He further said by working with relevant stakeholders and ministries, those are among the issues in which they will have to invest much of their energy in a bid to improve services and connectivity to such marginalized communities.
The new Berea DA indicated that the district has arable land, but land encroachment particularly in the farming is badly affecting production, moreover he noted that access to farming inputs is a serious issue although the government has introduced the subsidy, but not all benefit from such initiative.
“Many people who dwell in remote areas still struggle to access seeds, fertilizers and other related services and I commit to work with responsible stakeholders in order to navigate ways of coming up with sustainable solutions,” he boldly said.
On the other hand, still in the agricultural sector he stressed that stock theft is yet another issue which has left many people vulnerable to poverty and he is going to work closely with the police in trying to uproot such an issue which is also affecting the country’s economy.
Additionally, Mr. Mokete highlighted that Teyateyaneng remains the face of Berea district, but the town is not in good condition with lack of parking for vehicles, roads filled with potholes and thus living road users prone to unnecessary accidents and as a result he said there is a lot to be done in transforming the town.
Before landing the role of DA Berea, Mr. Mokete has worked in various sectors which includes construction, diamond mining sector basically in Lets’eng, Kao and Liqhobong, public transport sector and other areas.
Meanwhile, in the history of Berea district Mr. Mokete becomes the second DA who comes from Mats’ekheng side, after Mr. Nts’ala Letsoela.
