HERDERS URGED TO REFRAIN FROM SETTING RANGELAND FIRES

Berea, Nov. 23 — The Ministry of Environment and Forestry has urged Tsoelike herders at Mosalemane to refrain from setting rangelands fires as they contribute to climate change and have a huge environmental impact.

The Environment Ministry issued the warning during the Berea District Disaster Management Team (DDMT) climate change awareness campaign held at Tsoelike, Berea district targeting herders, farmers and general public through the support of the World Food Programme (WFP) through the project of Improving Adaptive Capacity of the Vulnerable and Food Insecure Population in Lesotho (IACoV).

When addressing the people, Ministry of Environment Senior Information Officer Ms. Sefora Naptjoane Motsoahae said most Basotho sustain their livelihoods through livestock keeping of which graze at the rangelands, but most of them are badly degraded.

Ms. Motsoahae said recently the country is faced with a challenge of people who deliberately attack rangelands with fire and that leads to the huge environmental destruction, natural vegetation loss, extinction of natural herbs and the worst part they contribute to climate change.
