Maseru, Jun. 11 — A paramedic and volunteer at Maseru District Hospital, Mrs. Mahlohonolo Palime, has urged members of the public to always keep emergency contact numbers readily available, particularly during the winter season when fire-related incidents tend to increase.
Mrs. Palime says emergency responders frequently receive reports of house fires and accidents involving children during the cold months, often caused by the use of braziers, heaters, candles and other heating devices.
He notes that having emergency numbers easily accessible can significantly reduce response times and improve the chances of saving lives and property.
She explains that quick reporting enables rescue teams, fire-fighters and medical personnel to arrive at the scene promptly, provide immediate assistance to victims and prevent fires from spreading to neighbouring homes and properties.
She further stresses the importance of educating children about fire safety and ensuring that heating appliances are used responsibly.
She encourages parents and guardians to closely monitor children, especially when heating devices are in use, as many winter-related accidents occur inside homes.
Meanwhile, he has expressed concern over a growing trend in which members of the public prioritize taking photographs and videos of accident scenes instead of assisting victims or contacting emergency services.
According to Mrs Palime, valuable time is often lost while bystanders record incidents for social media rather than helping those in distress.
He says such actions can have devastating consequences, as some victims may lose their lives unnecessarily while awaiting assistance. Mrs Palime urges the public to make saving lives their first priority by immediately calling emergency services, alerting nearby residents and offering safe assistance where possible.
As winter conditions continue across the country, emergency personnel are calling on communities to remain vigilant, practice fire safety measures and work together to ensure that accidents and disasters are reported quickly to help protect lives and property.
